February 2009: The Tooth Fairy Forgot to Come

This morning I was awakened by a very sad 6 yr old who said, "Mom, the tooth fairy didn't come last night. I slept on the side of my pillow so he could get to my tooth under it." Aahhhh! How could the tooth fairy have overlooked that?

Poor little "O" was so brave when the amazingly patient, song-singing dentist yanked out his tooth. (It was suggested by my mother-in-law not to use the word "yank" in front of Owen, and I definitely agree.) He really did a great job despite his immense anxiety, although I have to hand it to this dentist, who I might add, did all her work whilest composing a new version of "Mary had a Little Lamb" in which Mary and the lamb travel to the mall. She really is an amazing pedia-dentist (is that a term?). She had Owen wiggle his fingers to relax. It worked pretty well in combination with the trance-like verses of "The lamb he fell asleep at the mall, asleep at the mall, asleep at the mall... Mary used the loud speaker, loud speaker, loud speaker, Mary used the loud speaker to ask for help to find him..."

So after all that, how could the Tooth Fairy-- who, by the way, is named Joe and lives under the stairs and builds his house out of teeth he collects--forget? Owen came to his own conclusion, having read his "Tooth Fairy Book" the night before, that he had failed to "follow the instructions" by not leaving a note for him. I tried to explain to him that perhaps since he wakes up at about 6:00 - 6:30 am that Joe came and had to leave because he woke up too early. Mike suggested maybe Joe was on vacation. Owen thankfully is convinced that because he didn't leave a note and perhaps because he or Eyan had stayed up too late, that Joe didn't come. Mike reassured him that the Tooth Fairy would definitely come tonight. I'm counting on it too!

Would love to hear any explanations you may have as to why the Tooth Fairy didn't come! Maybe this has never happened in your house, but be ready:-)

  1. That is so sweet. You a have a very obedient, introspective child. I wonder what I would have done as a kid...(shrug). Hope it went better the next night.

  2. If you guys have watched The Santa Clause movies you can tell him that the Tooth Fairy was at the North pole for their "historical figures convention" or whatever they called their little meeting with Father Time, Mother Nature, the Easter Bunny etc. :) We haven't lost any teeth yet here but we've had a bunch of them filled. Playing Tooth fairy would have been much cheaper! :)

  3. Our tooth fairy is a slacker and forgets a lot. When we live on the west coast, we concocted a story about early-rising boys vs. time zone...it was lame, but it worked. We now give ourselves email reminders, alarms, etc., so our little lies don't pile up too much!

  4. I'm glad to find out that our house hasn't been the only one missed by the tooth fairy. One time it took 3 days for the tooth fairy to come. Come on tooth fairy; what's up? We just assumed that the tooth fairy must have had a very busy week, and it took a little while to catch up!!

  5. Our tooth fairy is more of a day person, not really a night owl, so when Eleanna woke up, (a rookie mistake because it's the first child) and tooth fairy hadn't delivered - oops - "it must have just been too early". "You just keep checking throughout the day". She showed up eventually. She's a fairy, she likes light, who says she only has to come out at night :) - We always feel worse than they do. How did our parents keep up! - love Karlee

  6. Ok this is what we did. We just told the kids that the tooth fairy hid the loot and then offered to go and find it and then came out with it. I actually got really good at faking the kids out!!

  7. Hi Briana...we have an elder in our ward whose seminary teacher was your brother! His name is Drew Taylor. I was teaching gospel principles this morning and when I mentioned I'd served in the NYNYN mission, he immediately asked if I'd known an Elder Dix. Another random connection to my fantastic friend Briana and her fam! :)

  8. In our house the tooth fairy doesn't come b/c he/she isn't real! No joke. Ethan told me that he knows those "people" are fake and it would just be better if I knew that and not tried to play along...darn kid ruined it for ME! I tried every which way to convince him she was real and he wasn't even buying it for one minute! He said "Mom you'de just be lying to me if you said she/he was real." Aint no foolin' this kid :(
